This becomes very clear from his writings on the History of the Church (pp. Lenti clearly shows that Don Bosco had little sympathy for the rapid modernization in state and church that was the context in which he worked. The interplay between the triumph of the Risorgimento in Turin and Don Bosco’s attempts to resist the consequent liberalization is carefully explained. However, the crowning achievement of this decade was his development from these young people of a group that became the founders of the Salesians, both as a religious order and as the wider Salesian community.
